Sports program to build inclusion for Houstonians with disabilities

Adapted Sports Day participants train on skills to play the adopted sport of wheelchair basketball, Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022, in Houston.Doug Garner recently retired from a nearly 30-year career coaching wheelchair basketball that started shortly after his son was born in 1986 with spina bifida, a birth defect in the spinal cord.

“Not all disabilities are the same,” said Garner, who was inducted into the National Wheelchair Basketball Association Hall of Fame in 2019. “There should be an opportunity for everybody.” “We saw a need, so we initially started the foundation for that. It’s now living on with other community initiatives that we’re doing,” said Meredith Pardue, athlete affairs and accommodation senior manager with the Harris County Houston Sports Authority.

Pardue said that the organization plans to extend these programs into school districts to educate teachers, coaches, and athletic directors to be more inclusive. “You guys are benefiting from the advocacy of everybody who came before me who started this; I just continue it,” Hunter said.
