A new Pew Research Center study says that Americans have lost faith in its leaders to act ethically

“There are big conversations in culture,” says Lee Rainie, the director of internet and technology research at the Pew Research Center and a coauthor of the study. “We were looking for people who are powerful people in the news—and new controversies surround at least some of them.” “In trust research, people think less of national leaders than they do of local ones,” Rainie contends, highlighting American disgust with polarization and the tone of discourse. “Congress is the face of that,” he says. “When people think about government, they think about the president and Congress.”

Among survey respondents, 74% of Democrats think issues are covered fairly while just 31% of Republicans feel that way; and only one fifth of Republicans think journalists are held accountable compared to nearly two thirds of Democrats. Attitudes toward police officers were more complex. At least 74% of Americans feel that police protect people, do their jobs well and are responsible, fair and accurate. Nearly two thirds agree that police officers are nondiscriminatory. When the responses are broken down by race and political party, there are noticeable differences in how these factions responded.
