A battery-less RFID tag could do the job just as well as a GPS landing module. The researchers have further refined how the tag works.
A collaboration between researchers at The University of Tokyo and telecommunications company NTT in Japan has led to the development of a radio-frequency identification -based guidance system for autonomous drones, a To make matters worse, changes in weather conditions, like fog and heavy rain, impact the image quality generated from onboard sensors. Moreover, when drones operate in remote areas, the guidance solutions need to be as low-tech as possible to keep downtimes to a minimum. The Japanese collaboration has found the solution in RFIDs.RFID tags are battery-less tags placed in books or merchandise that are temporarily powered up by the radio signal emitted by an RFID reader.
Since conventional RFID tags are expected to work over extremely short ranges, the researchers also worked on improving the reflective capabilities of the RFID tags. For this, the research team added corner reflectors to the tags so that they could receive and send back signals over a wider three-dimensional angle.
