For scientists trying to keep track of over 400,000 objects, including satellites, discarded rocket bodies and other junk flying around above the earth — the job just got a little easier.

There are around 6,000 active satellites in orbit right now.

"Most satellites are launched into polar orbit, which means that they pass over the north and south pole," he said.
