Commentary: The best way to protect our local institutions isn’t to bring in outside money but to educate voters through grassroots efforts.

. But just because their efforts failed doesn’t mean they’re no longer a threat.

The national organizations coordinating these campaigns have been fully embraced by the Republican Party and its billionaire funders like Uihlein, David Koch and Betsy DeVos. They recruit and encourage folks to run for office who share their antipathy to public education, even though, as the Tribune reported, they rarely win.

Despite increased partisanship, excellent grassroots candidates continue to run for office with support from nonpartisan local volunteers. Even without the benefit of paid operatives and contributions from billionaires, these candidates generally win.
