A new public holiday and more oversight of government spending on Indigenous affairs are among the ideas being taken into Victoria's treaty negotiations later this year.

A public holiday celebrating Aboriginal culture and early access to seniors cards for Indigenous elders are among the ideas to be discussed in Vic toria's treaty negotiations.

Assembly co-chair Ngarra Murray, who is a multi-clan traditional owner, said the public holiday proposal had sprung from a deep desire among Aboriginal communities to see their cultures more deeply embedded in Victorian life. Assembly co-chair and Gunditjmara man Rueben Berg said his community wanted to see the First Peoples' Assembly given a greater say over policy and funding decisions that affected Aboriginal communities.

Mr Berg said the treaty negotiations would explore the idea of the assembly being given more responsibility for decisions about Aboriginal communities that currently rest with First Peoples Minister Natalie Hutchins. "And we're always accountable to our community, that's at the forefront of our minds … both our community as First Peoples, but the broader community as well, can have the confidence that the assembly's doing the right things."
