A small eruption of cooler material rising and then collapsing into the surface was filmed by the European Space Agency.
The European Space Agency recently shared footage of the sun's "ever-changing landscape", which was filmed by its Solar Orbiter in September last year.
"Don't be fooled by the use of 'small' here: this eruption is bigger than Earth," the European Space Agency said. The Orbiter made its closest approach to the fiery planet about 43 million kilometres away - about one third of the Earth's distance from the sun.
