A new video from an illegal gathering of Jewish worshippers in Melbourne shines light on their tactics as a 72-year-old is charged with assault.

Other commentators have been more critical of the response from authorities, saying the optics of targeting the Jewish community on a holy night does not sit well with them.

However, the Council of Orthodox Synagogues has repeatedly emphasised that the health orders must be followed, and previous gatherings of worshippers have ben condemned by community leaders. Police had been in the area since the early hours of Tuesday morning. Eyewitnesses said some of those gathered chanted, pushed cameras and yelled insults at media and police as well as climbed onto a nearby building.

Members of the local Orthodox community allegedly broke stay-at-home orders to observe the holy day Rosh Hashana.
