New Year's Day is identified as the worst day for family violence, with experts warning of increased danger for women and children during the festive period. Data reveals a surge in family violence incidents over Christmas and New Year's in Australia.
New Year's Day has been identified as one of the worst days for family violence , with advocates warning that the coming weeks will be 'dangerous' for many women and children. National organisations Our Watch and No to Violence are urging men concerned about their behaviour to seek help and are calling for increased efforts in primary prevention of both violence and substance abuse during this festive season.
This comes as data released in both Victoria and New South Wales highlights the escalating toll of family violence over the Christmas period. Our Watch chief executive Patty Kinnersly said the festive period could be particularly dangerous due to the combination of alcohol and some men's adherence to harmful gender stereotypes. 'We know alcohol can be a factor, but violence is always a choice. NSW police responded to more family and domestic violence assault incidents on New Year's Day than any other day of the year, according to new research from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR).'The early hours of New Year's Day are particularly concerning, with assaults peaking between midnight and 3am, reflecting the extended revelry of New Year's Eve,' BOCSAR Executive Director Jackie Fitzgerald said. Assaults also usually peak on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, with both days showing 78 per cent more domestic violence assaults than the daily average. On Christmas Day alone last year, police responded to 372 family violence incidents – up from the yearly daily average of 279. The most common form of family violence recorded on Christmas Day involved perpetrators breaching orders – with 91 offences recorded, as well as assault – with 79 offences recorde
