Fireworks displays in Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne are all scheduled to go ahead as planned, while Canberra has called off the celebrations due to high fire risk.
But popular vantage points around it have been closed, and the display is still facing significant political and community opposition.
A statement to the event's official website said cancelling the event would seriously hurt Sydney businesses. Melbourne's temperature on Tuesday is forecast to drop to a maximum of 21C, which helped give the pyrotechnical show the green light despite calls to cancel them with bushfires ravaging the state.
"It's about the balance of recognising that there are people that want to come together, that want to actually spend some time with others in celebration after what may have been a very, very tough time for them," Ms Capp said of Melbourne's New Year's Eve celebrations. In Adelaide, New Year's Eve fireworks will also go ahead despite calls for the displays to be cancelled in light of the fires still burning across the state.
