The tremors were reported at around 10:23am on Friday, April 5.
New York City has been rocked by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake causing widespread tremors across the region.
The USGS has also warned "Be Ready For More Quakes" as aftershocks often hit after the initial quake. The agency explains: "The mainshock is the largest earthquake in a sequence ." Citizens in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Connecticut and other areas of the Northeast reported shaking. Tremors lasting for several seconds were felt over 200 miles away near the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border.
John Wellman, on holiday from London, said: "It just came out of nowhere and the building started swaying. I've never seen anything like it in my life. In midtown Manhattan, the usual cacophony of morning traffic grew louder as motorists blared their horns on the momentarily shuddering streets. Some Brooklyn residents even reported hearing a booming sound and their building shaking. In an apartment house in Manhattan's East Village, a resident from more earthquake-prone California calmed nervous neighbours.
"I noticed the door trembling on its frame," said India Hays, a barista. "I thought surely there couldn't be an earthquake here."
