A celebration at the Hamilton Fish pool on the Lower East Side kicked off the the New York City summer pool season. The celebration comes amid an ongoing lifeguard shortage, which is causing many swim programs to be cancelled. elijahwestbrook reports.
"The Parks system has figured out how to get every pool opened anyhow. We want people to know, don't worry. Come to your pools. Today is the first day of the season, and it's a safe and healthy way to enjoy the summer," Levine said.
While the search continues, Gov. Kathy Hochul says she's working to boost pay for New York lifeguards. Starting rates will go from about $15 per hour to $20 upstate, and downstate it goes from $18 to $22. Despite the shortage, some are looking on the bright side because one thing remains certain.
