Lawmakers in New York have passed new gun laws raising the minimum age to buy assault rifles and banning bullet-proof vests for most citizens in the wake of multiple mass shootings in the US.
Speaker Carl Heastie said the recent shootings in Uvalde, Oklahoma and Buffalo meant politicians “cannot wait to take action”.“This package of legislation will strengthen laws that we have on the books, help authorities better communicate with our federal partners about gun violence, work to address the role social media plays in violence and acts of domestic terrorism, and more.”
Alex Shephard, a reporter from the New Republic, told Sky News Australia that gun reforms were often dictated by which political party held the majority in the state. “And I think in general that highlights the same issue that we faced after these mass shootings and going back really to Sandy Hook that was the last time there was certainly major momentum behind changing national gun laws and nothing happened then.”
Speaking from the White House Mr Biden questioned how many more innocent lives need to be taken before the country says “enough”.“I know we can't prevent every tragedy but here is what I believe we have to do, here is what the overwhelming majority of the American people believe we must do.
