“I responded to Mr Barilaro and stated, ‘but John, the Agent General role will be filled well before you retire from this place’.“I responded and stated, ‘our current office and staff are in California.’“The conversation in relation to this matter then ended.”- known as a senior investment and trade commissioner to the Americas - earlier this month on the basis it had become “untenable” to take the position.
Mr Connell served as Mr Barilaro’s chief of staff - or most senior advisor - from April 2017 until December 2019 when the pair mutually agreed that he leave the office because Mr Barilaro had ceased to “take my advice and [was] seeking outside counsel.”
