boat skipper who crashed on his way to work and died the next day in hospital had fatally ingested antifreeze.
A toxicologist found Lee had consumed ethylene glycol, also known as antifreeze, a chemical used in car radiators, Coroner Meenal Duggal said in her findings released this week. He pulled himself from the vehicle but was unable to climb back up the hill, so he spent the night in the bush drinking from a stream to quench his "insatiable thirst".
They discussed a previous occasion when someone working at the salmon farm had driven off the road, and a local farmer had to tow the vehicle out. Lee said he was the driver on that occasion too. As ethylene glycol, or antifreeze, was detected in Lee's toxicology results, concerns were raised about whether Lee drank this from the coolant bottle in his vehicle. Lee had described being insatiably thirsty after the crash.
Senior Constable Burbery, of the Tasman District Serious Crash Unit, said the road held "grave consequences" for drivers if they veered too far left when negotiating left-hand curves. Burbery recommended the Marlborough District Council install reflective roadside marker posts to keep drivers from straying too far left.
