A "vivacious" New Zealand nurse has died after experiencing flu-like symptoms, while her husband battles on in the ICU.Her husband, 53-year-old John Leonard, remains in a critical condition, leaving their two teenage sons facing an uncertain future.Maria's brother, Darrell Packe, told"These were two people who were very fit, very healthy, very vibrant.
While Maria's body has been released back to the family, they are still waiting for a report from the Coroner with her exact cause of death, Darrell said.After Maria's death, the Packe-Leonard family soon realised how sick John was becoming."We took him to the doctor and got him some medication, but the next day his son rang me and told me to get there fast," Darrell recalled.
John remains in a critical condition at Wellington Hospital, having developed a blood infection that is affecting his lung and kidneys.Darrell encouraged those ill with flu-like symptoms to surround themselves with support in case they deteriorated - and not to hesitate to seek medical help.
