The volcano caused the largest eruption on earth in the last 5,000 years when it last exploded in 232 AD.
The Taupo volcano was responsible for the world's largest eruption in 5,000 years, spraying more than 100 cubic kilometres of material into the atmosphere when it exploded 1,800 years ago.

However, the agency said while it was the first time the Taupo volcano alert has been raised to level 1, the chance of eruption remained low. "Although this is the first time we have raised the VAL to 1, this is not the first volcanic unrest at Taupo," it said.
