Rescue teams, including the New Zealand coast guard have attempted to gain access to the island but have said it is too dangerous for them to make it onto land. The ash plume reached 3657m above the mainland. The last recorded eruption was almost 20 years ago in 2001.Conditions were too volatile for rescue teams to reach the island.
A Waikato DHB spokesman told the media outlet Waikato Hospital has received five patients involved in the incident, with another four injured patients arriving this evening.Scientists had noticed increased activity in the last couple of weeks and had increased the alert level. "The ministry of foreign affairs have also stood up their systems to assist with any response required for those further afield. I will be travelling to the area this evening alongside the minister for civil defence.
"Ovation of the Seas will remain overnight until we learn more about the situation. We will offer all possible assistance to our guests and local authorities."A man claiming to be a passenger on the Ovation of the Seas tweeted that the ship's captain made an announcement saying it would not be sailing at its scheduled 6pm departure time.
