Seven volcano victims are in a critical condition in Sydney hospitals, as the search resumes for the final two bodies still unaccounted for. 9News

Toxic gas and the risk on another eruption hampered efforts to recover the bodies.Colonel Ryan McKinstry said the New Zealand Defence Force was united in our "grief for those who have been killed, injured and traumatised" by the events on the island.There were fears toxic gas remaining near the eruption site could prove fatal if inhaled.He said they were under "extreme heat stress" and wore oxygen masks and a sealed garment on top of military gear.

"They will say 'it's their job' but the reality is we need people like that to do their job to get beyond moments like this."Recovered bodies believed to be AustraliansAustralia's Foreign Minister Marise Payne earlier said was not clear when the two remaining bodies of those killed on White Island can be retrieved.

Two specialist burns units in Sydney, at the Royal North Shore Hospital and Concord Hospital, are now caring for a total of eight patients, with doctors warning they face a long and painful recovery.Surgery is underway on some of the victims, who have between seven per cent and 65 per cent burns. "These burns have been caused by what's called a pyropastic surge, where you have patients enveloped by a moving cloud of extremely hot gases and also as volcanic material such as pumice and dust," he said.

Two died in hospital, one was presumed dead, and there were plans to transfer the fourth to Australia for ongoing medical care.Family and friends of victims of the White Island eruption gathered in Whakatane this morning. Whakatane Airport has been a hive of activity, with a Hercules C130 defence force plane arriving on Wednesday to support the mission and helicopters coming and going on this morning.
