While most votes will be counted by Saturday night, it might take days or even weeks of negotiations between political parties before the next government is finalised.
after six years of a centre-left government led for most of that time by former prime minister Jacinda Ardern.
Under New Zealand’s proportional voting system, Mr Luxon, 53, and his National Party would likely have to form an alliance with other parties to command a majority. Also at stake in the election is the government’s relationship with Indigenous Māori. Mr Luxon has promised to axe the Māori Health Authority, which he says creates two separate health systems. Mr Hipkins says he’s proud of such co-governance efforts and has accused Mr Luxon of condoning racism.
On the final day of campaigning on Friday, Mr Hipkins grinned as he joined a Zumba dance class at an Auckland market. The prime minister looked to be about a half-beat behind in his dance moves.“I’m sure you’ll choose the best shots, when I’m at my most co-ordinated,” Mr Hipkins joked with reporters after the event.
Earlier in the week, Mr Luxon, who served as chief executive of Air New Zealand, told an energised crowd in Wellington he would crack down on gangs.
