A new zebra crossing is to be built near a Devon school despite concerns over its value for money.

More than £120,000 is to be spent on installing a zebra crossing near a Devon school, despite concerns over its location and cost.

Appledore Primary School had been campaigning for a crossing on the A386 since funding was removed for a school crossing patrol. They argued that money would be better spent on schemes encouraging people to walk or cycle instead. There was also concern that most children attending the school lived outside Appledore and the loss of parking spaces would push problems into nearby roads.

But Devon County Council said building the crossing close to the school would cause the least disruption to parking, the"The proposal aligns with government objectives, including supporting local growth and levelling up, tackling public health issues and the decarbonisation of transport," the council said.

The project is being funded by the government's Active Travel Fund, with a contribution from Baker Estates.
