Newark’s almost 100-year-old Symphony Hall is in the midst of a renaissance and wants the community to be part of it.
On a recent weekday at Newark Symphony Hall, staff busied themselves working behind the stage. A new recording studio neared completion. And flood- and weather- damaged walls leading to the main concert hall stood ready to be restored.
Free salsa dancing classes are held in the Terrace Ballroom every third Friday. And this fall, the staff will offer ballet instruction to area youth in a partnership with New Jersey Ballet. “Here is an opportunity for us to create a case that you can do this and be inclusive in every aspect of the work.
“In the 1980s, the city itself was getting browner and Blacker,” Nash Laird said. “Assets that were patronized by Black and brown residents were less valued. “I imagine that many people thought that there wasn’t a place for two thriving performing arts centers. But because [of] senators and assemblymen who advocated, we are now getting long overdue financial support with the goal of remedying decades of disregard and neglect.”
Partnerships have been most beneficial to Symphony Hall’s success and longevity. So, in the spring, it partnered with NJPAC for the Festival of Praise, a gospel concert held in Sarah Vaughan Hall, the main concert venue. “The impetus for partnering is that we are two Black institutions who are serving and providing a space for Black artists, who are presenting and producing work in front of Black audiences,” Shay Wafer, WACO Theater Center’s executive director, said.
