A newborn baby has died in Perth after a home birth went wrong. 7NEWS
“The death of a newborn baby is utterly tragic, and we send our deepest condolences to the family in this devastating time,” a WA Department of Health spokesperson said.
“The Department of Health Patient Safety Surveillance Unit and Coronial Liaison Unit provide oversight of clinical incident management and Coronial reviews respectively.A doula provides physical and emotional support for a woman and her partner during pregnancy, labour and birth. While doulas facilitate effective communication with the midwife or doctor during labour and birth, they don’t offer medical care and must not undertake elements of clinical care or interventions.“A midwife does not legally have to be present at a home birth in Western Australia.Only medical practitioners, midwifes and medical students can provide clinical care under WA’s health practitioner regulation act.A report will be prepared for the coroner.
”This is done by the Coronal Investigation Squad and like with any sudden death is standard procedure,” the spokesperson said.
