Liverpool remain the only team to have beaten Newcastle in the Premier League this season, but now they've done it twice. Liverpool are back in the top-four equation, and Loris Karius is on his way to Wembley...
Date published: Saturday 18th February 2023 7:28 -Liverpool completed a Premier League double over Newcastle – the Magpies’ only two defeats of the season – with a 2-0 victory at St James’ Park set up by two early goals and effectively rubber-stamped by Nick Pope’s red card with barely half an hour on the clock.
Newcastle battled gamely to keep the score down, and had chances of their own, but the points were always going to be Liverpool’s once Pope was dismissed for handling the ball way outside his penalty area. Having been partly at fault for both goals, scored by Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo, Pope’s rush of blood was doubly costly as it rules him out of next weekend’s Carabao Cup final. Martin Dubravka replaced Pope here but is cup-tied for the Wembley date with Manchester United having appeared in earlier rounds when on loan at… Manchester United.
It means former Liverpool keeper Loris Karius is in line to play for Newcastle at Wembley in what would be his first appearance for an English club since his infamous performance for Liverpool in the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid.
