Date published: Monday 20th March 2023 6:05 -Newcastle United have reportedly ‘firmed up’ their interest in Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay after showing ‘tentative interest’ in January.
The signing of a deep-lying midfielder would give the Brazilian the chance to thrive in a more attacking position and could potentially make Howe’s side a lot more dangerous in the final third. Summer signings Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, as well as Fred, are all ahead of the 26-year-old in the pecking order under Erik ten Hag.
Howe, chief scout Steve Nickson and director of football Dan Ashworth all agree McTominay ‘would add something different to the squad’, although he will not be seen as a ‘glamorous name’ that will excite supporters. In a boost to the Geordies, McTominay is ‘open’ to moving to St James’ Park and has been ‘impressed’ by the club’s speedy progression under the former Bournemouth boss.
