Multiple people injured after a vehicle strikes waiting Newcastle fans; Thousands feel an earthquake in rural Victoria; The biggest Indigenous rugby league carnival in the world is underway. Thousands feel an earthquake in rural Victoria. Up to seven people, including one child, have been seriously injured after a vehicle was reported to have struck multiple pedestrians on Newcastle Link Road in Wallsend. It is understood that two people are in a serious condition and two are critical, including the child.
Police are describing it as a major incident, saying there were hundreds of bystanders at the scene who were waiting to farewell the Knights ahead of Sunday’s NRL grand final. Diversions are in place, and motorists are advised to find alternative routes as the road is closed in both directions. More than 15,000 people have reported feeling a 4.8 magnitude earthquake centred about 135 kilometres southeast of Melbourne.
Geoscience Australia says the quake, shortly after 2:00am, was relatively shallow, at 10 kilometres deep. These talkback callers to radio station 3AW described what it felt like:"I was sitting on the couch, and it was a little movement and then another movement sort of thing. You know, it was like a little wave, and then it built up to a big wave.
"G7 countries have agreed to release up to 100 million barrels of emergency diesel and crude, amid continued restrictions on global oil supplies. The announcement followed a meeting of G7 leaders on Friday after the United States — which is a member of the group — intensified pressure on Europe to release strategic oil reserves.
US President Donald Trump had threatened a diesel export ban but has since walked back the warning, telling reporters, "we're going to be doing what we're supposed to do". Energy Minister Chris Bowen has welcomed the G7's announcement and says Australia will continue to allow suppliers to hold 20 per cent less diesel and petrol in reserves until January 2027.
"I do welcome the actions of G7, particularly the confirmation by the United States that they are not intending to put any restrictions on diesel supply. Australia hasn't been getting much diesel or fuel from the United States, about two per cent. But nevertheless, any restrictions on exports are a blow to international fuel movements and would be a negative development.
"Flydubai has launched a full official investigation into what happened on the flight deck of a plane travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv that was diverted to Saudi Arabia on September 30. Passengers and crew subdued the co-pilot, who had stabbed the captain in what Israeli officials have said was an apparent attempt to crash the plane.
In a written statement, Flydubai Chief Executive Ghaith Al Ghaith says the airline needs to establish the facts, and flights to Tel Aviv have been suspended for the time being.
"I know there are many questions about what happened on board FZ 1073. A full official investigation, led by the relevant authorities and fully supported by Flydubai, is underway. It is important that we allow this process to establish the facts. We are deeply grateful that everyone on board FZ 1073 is safe.
"In sport, day two of the Koori Knockout — one of the largest First Nations sporting and cultural gatherings —-is underway in Raymond Terrace in the Hunter Region of New South Wales. The four-day rugby league competition is being hosted by defending champions, the Newcastle Yowies, with 180 teams across men's, women's and junior categories taking part in the tournament.
Abie Newie is a Wonnarua man and Yowies committee member and told NITV Radio the Knockout is about more than just sport.
"It's the biggest Indigenous rugby league carnival in the world; it's the biggest Indigenous gathering in Australia, it's got to be given the respect that it deserves. I think it's so important for our people to get together. It's been run by us, for us, and it's always been run by us for us. There's no government department overriding the Knockout or overseeing it.
It's all about self-determination, Aboriginal community-run and controlled.
