Ten people were injured when a car driven by an 18-year-old P-plate holder crashed into a crowd of Newcastle Knights supporters during the team's grand final farewell. A five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man remain in critical condition, while eight others were hospitalised. The driver was arrested and taken for mandatory testing. Scientists are also monitoring possible aftershocks after a magnitude 4.8 earthquake near Leongatha in South Gippsland, Victoria, where more than 16,000 people reported feeling the tremor but no injuries or damage were reported.

Two people critical after a car ploughs into a crowd of Newcastle Knights supporters; aftershocks possible after a magnitude 4.8 quake hits Victoria; the countdown is on to the Roosters-Broncos NRLW grand final. Aftershocks possible after a magnitude 4.8 quake hits Victoria. Ten people have been injured after a car drove into a large crowd of Newcastle Knights supporters gathered for the team’s grand final farewell this morning.

A five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man are in a critical condition, while eight others were also taken to hospital. Police say the driver, an 18-year-old P-plater, was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

"There was tens of thousands of people out here today, about 1000 in this vicinity. We were escorting the Knights bus, which hadn't left the stadium at that stage with traffic and highway patrol right along the freeway here or the link road. There was a traffic and highway patrol officer stationed at this intersection ready to, to close the intersection down. Unfortunately, a young 18-year-old P-plater driving erratically has lost control of the vehicle and gone into the crowd.

" The Knights say their thoughts are with everyone affected, including those injured and their families. The team bus was diverted from its planned route following the crash. Scientists are warning aftershocks could follow an earthquake that shook parts of Victoria early this morning. The magnitude 4.8 quake struck near Leongatha in South Gippsland just after 2am, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

More than 16,000 people reported feeling it, but there are no reports of injuries or damage. Researchers are now deploying more seismic equipment to the region to track any further activity.

“South Gippsland where this earthquake occurred is one of our more seismically active parts of the country. We know that it’s an area where seismicity is common, and we would expect aftershocks from an earthquake of this magnitude. ”The failed execution of convicted murderer Christa Pike in Tennessee is putting the state's use of the death penalty under renewed scrutiny. Pike remains critically ill in hospital after two attempts to execute her by lethal injection failed.

The 50-year-old was sentenced to death in the 1990s after being convicted of a murder she carried out as a teenager. Vanderbilt University law professor Christopher Slobogin said the case could deepen opposition to capital punishment.

"So, what Christa Pike did was horrific, deserves punishment, but her argument now is that she cannot be executed on one of two grounds. Both of them are based on the Eighth Amendment, which prohibits cruel unusual punishment. The first argument would be that at least in her case, execution would be cruel unusual because she apparently is not going to respond well to lethal injection and therefore that can't work and there's no other dignified method of killing her.

"Manchester City football club has denied it committed serious breaches of the Premier League's financial rules. The league said earlier this week that City had used "sham" commercial contracts as part of schemes to inflate revenue and understate costs by more than $1.7 billion dollars. It says those actions created the appearance that the club complied with financial regulations while systematically breaking Premier League Rules for nearly a decade.

"The club's firm position is that on multiple grounds, the opinion contains clear material errors of law, principle and fact and is unsafe. The club is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League and a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all its positions relating to this case.

"The final countdown is on to tomorrow’s NRLW grand final between the Sydney Roosters and Brisbane Broncos. Roosters coach John Strange says winger Jayme Fressard is pushing to prove her fitness as she battles a shoulder injury.

"She’s gonna have a 20-minute fitness test, mainly defence. We’ve got a couple of our players out there. She’s gonna have to tackle, see how she goes… fingers crossed - I'm going 55 per cent and sliding in our favour that she's going to play.

"Broncos coach Scott Prince says the team will honour one of the greats of the women’s game. "Obviously in Ali’s case it’s her final game. So not only is it a sign of celebration, but it’s also a sign of respect for one of the greats of our game, and that’s what we do at the Broncs.
