The U.S. has a confirmed ambassador to Israel again after Tuesday’s Senate confirmation of Jack Lew, who is walking into a difficult situation with a close Midd

Jacob Lew, former treasury secretary under President Barack Obama, testifies during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing to examine his nomination as Ambassador to the State of Israel, Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023, in Washington. The U.S. has a confirmed ambassador to Israel again after Tuesday’s Senate confirmation of Jack Lew, who is walking into a difficult situation with a close Middle Eastern ally at war with a terrorist group in a conflict at risk of spreading further.

His confirmation was quick compared to others, as dozens of Biden’s nominees are still waiting Senate hearings and votes to confirm them to posts months after being nominated. “He lacks either the nerve or the will to really stand up for Israel when it really matters and the chips are down, as they are today,” Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark. Said on the Senate floor.

“We’re very excited to get him over there so that he can get on the ground and start leading our efforts to support Israel and their fight against Hamas but also to help us integrate and continue to lead the effort to get humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Tuesday. “Our expectation is that Mr. Lew will be taking the lead on those issues once he gets on the ground.

Biden has been a committed supporter of Israel’s right to defend itself after the terrorist attack and pushed Congress to pass billions in military aid to assist in the war. While they have stood behind Israel, he and other administration officials have also urged it to avoid civilian casualties in its assaults on Hamas.
