How alopecia changed this news anchor's perspective on her on-air natural hair journey
seeks to spread on-air with her mane of full-bodied raven ringlets. On TikTok, the 33-year-old broadcaster has amassed a devoted following as she opens up about her years-long natural hair journey, which saw her slowly going from chemically straightened hair to her natural curls in front of a large, dedicated viewership. “Sharing your personal story is tough when your job is to share others’ stories,” admits Bigos, who first revealed heron TikTok back in November 2020. The video quickly hit 1.
Months later, though, Bigos’s balding became more severe and a subsequent scalp biopsy revealed she had a type of alopecia called Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia . “I cried so much the day I was diagnosed, worrying if I would lose all my hair,” she says, adding that she also learned her condition was one of the most common types of hair loss in Black women, affecting up to 15% according to the. As difficult as that day was, it’s one that Bigos appreciates in retrospect.
On the other hand, Bigos’s TikTok followers have been as curious about the process as they have the final result. “I began to build a community of women who were at different stages in their journey: transitioning, wanting to transition but too scared, happy they did it, or contemplating the move,” she says. “In numbers, there is strength. In community, there is relatability and connection. In sharing, there is inspiration for someone to do the same.
Beyond just sharing her natural hair transition, Bigos also pulls back the curtain on her struggles with alopecia. “In a world where we push appearing perfect and put together, it’s been hard opening up,” she says. “You can’t see the baldness because it’s in the back and covered with black hair dye and hair fibers. So, why reveal a vulnerability none of my viewers know about? Because vulnerability leads to connection. And we all need connection these days.
