News Corp Australia has issued an apology after using a photo of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in an unrelated story about child sexual abuse. Three outlets - Sky News Australia, The Australian and the Daily Telegraph - published a photo of Miriki Performing Arts dancers connected to a report on comments made by Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price on October 17 last year.
The image, used without permission, had been taken to promote a performance of Miriki Performing Arts at the Cairn’s Children’s Festival and featured children adorned with body paint designs. “The report was not related to the children in the image in any way,” the apology on Friday read. “We did not have the consent of the children or their parents, Miriki or Mr Mundraby to use the image and we unreservedly apologise to them for the hurt and harm that using the image in this way has caused.
