A judge has warned an extortionist she is considering throwing him in jail for blackmailing an engaged man on a gay dating app. 9News
“What do you want me to do,” the victim replied. “How did you find me?”After agreeing to meet Ruge at Southern Cross Train Station on March 2 last year, the victim – whose identity has been protected by a suppression order – handed over $200 in cash.
The extortionist continued to demand more money, leaving the victim a barrage of “menacing” voice mails, prosecutor Hayley Bate said. She described the crime as “extremely serious,” punishable by up to 15 years jail and accused the offender of “victim blaming” in his police interview. Ruge’s lawyer argued he shouldn’t receive time in prison because he had no prior convictions, entered an early guilty plea and had shown remorse.
Judge Hannan rejected suggestions that he was trying to do the right thing by “paint himself as some sort of moral guardian”. © Nine Digital Pty Ltd 2019
