Newt's death in Alien 3 is still a point of controversy for the 1992 sequel, but the original plan for her demise was even more disturbing.

It might sound impossible, but Newt's Alien 3 death was almost considerably worse. Aliens was a huge success upon release in 1986, but it was produced at a time before sequels were a given. James Cameron had no interest in returning for a third movie, Sigourney Weaver was reluctant and there was no story. Alien 3 thus spent many years in development hell, with rejected story ideas ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime .

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Alien 3 that hit theaters in 1992 trapped Ripley on the hellish prison planet Fury 161 with women-hating convicts and no weapons, with the film being a relentlessly bleak, dour horror entry in the Alien franchise. The third entry sets the tone early, with Ripley's fellow survivors Hicks and Newt dying offscreen.

With no other options, it swims over to Ripley's pod and slips into her mouth while she's still unconscious. In the end, this element was dropped for two reasons. The first was just to simplify Alien 3's narrative, and presumably to cut down on the VFX involved with having the Queen switch hosts. The second was to make Ripley's impregnation with the embryo a surprise.

Newt's Original Death Would Have Made Alien 3 More Controversial Although the anger has subsided over the decades, there's still a section of Alien devotees who hate the third movie for the Hicks/Newt decision. At least the final version has the good taste not to show her death and only faint glimpses of her autopsy.
