APChicago Bears defensive coordinator Alan Williams abruptly resigned Wednesday, days before the team faces the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3.
“It is with great regret that I tender my resignation as the Defensive Coordinator of the Chicago Bears Football Club effective immediately. I am taking a step back to take care of my health and my family,” theWilliams, a 31-year coaching veteran, with 22 in the NFL, was in his second season as Bears DC. He did not travel with the Bears to Tampa Bay in Week. 2.
“I value the NFL shield and all that it stands for and after taking some time to address my health, I plan to come back and coach again,” Williams said.Williams had been away from Halas Hall for at least a week, and the team called his absence “personal.” Coach Matt Eberflus has declined to give any insight into the situation and refused to answer Wednesday whether he and Williams have even spoken during the past week.
A Bears spokesperson said there was no police activity at Halas Hall on Wednesday or any other day relating to Williams.Williams spent 2018-21 as defensive backs/safeties coach for the Indianapolis Colts. Over his coaching tenure, he has also spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions. His coaching career began at Norview High School in 1992, and he then jumped to the college level at William & Mary, where he starred as a running back, in 1996.
The 0-2 Bears have given up 65 points over their first two games while allowing the fourth-most yards in the NFL.
