Ministers are planning to use the NHS app to allow patients to compare how busy different hospitals are Insiders say the update would drive down waiting lists The overall waiting list for England stood at 7.22 million in February 📱 HugoGye reports

Data on how long it takes to get an appointment at most hospitals is published online already but it is not straightforward to compare different treatment options.

The timeline for the update of the app remains uncertain, though a health service source said the technology was “constantly evolving”. Progess on data-sharing across the NHS has been uneven because of the fragmented nature of the system, with only 27 out of the dozens of hospital trusts currently allowing patients to manage their appointments via the app.

The Government has pledged to cut NHS waiting times and reduce the size of the post-Covid backlog as one of Mr Sunak’s five promises to the nation. The number of 12-month waits has fallen slightly from a January peak but still totals well over 300,000. The target for eliminating waits of this length does not need to be met until spring 2025.
