Graham Unwin, chief executive of NHS Cheshire and Merseyside, said he welcomed the probe into the convicted child killer

An NHS boss has vowed to cooperate “openly and fully” with the public inquiry into convicted child killer Lucy Letby in his first public remarks since she was found guilty.

It was confirmed at the start of this month, Lady Justice Thirlwall had been appointed to lead the public inquiry into how the former nurse committed her acts in an NHS hospital. In his first public comments since the end of Letby’s lengthy trial, NHS Cheshire and Merseyside chief executive Graham Unwin said he welcomed the independent probe.

“NHS Cheshire and Merseyside will continue to work closely with colleagues at the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to support the day-to-day delivery of safe and effective care and ensure any learning is shared across both Cheshire and Merseyside and the wider NHS.” During her previous trial, jurors were unable to reach a verdict on some offences including six counts of attempted murder in relation to five babies. Following a hearing on Monday at Manchester Crown Court, prosecutors said they will be seeking a retrial on one offence of attempted murder. They are not proceeding to a retrial on the remaining counts.
