Overall blood stocks in the NHS stand at 3.1 days but levels of O type blood have fallen to below two days
NHS Blood and Transplant has declared its first-ever amber alert as blood supplies dropped to a critically low level.
Air ambulances and emergency response vehicles carry O negative supplies for emergencies. The current amber alert is also thought to be due to ongoing staffing issues, with more staff needed to work at donor sessions. "We will remove the alert once we are confident that stocks have reached a sustainable level but anticipate this will continue for a minimum of 4 weeks.1. Implement your hospital Emergency Blood Management Arrangements for an Amber shortage status and continue to consider transfusion for only those patients in categories one and two of the NBTC red cell shortage plan.
