Our bodies tend not to produce enough of it during winter
With autumn underway and the days getting colder and shorter, Brits could be missing out on a vital vitamin needed for healthy bones, teeth and muscles.
The NHS website reads: "Vitamin D helps regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. These nutrients are needed to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy. A lack of vitamin D can lead to bone deformities such as rickets in children, and bone pain caused by a condition called osteomalacia in adults. Government advice is that everyone should consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement during the autumn and winter.
The NHS says: "During the autumn and winter, you need to get vitamin D from your diet because the sun is not strong enough for the body to make vitamin D. But since it's difficult for people to get enough vitamin D from food alone, everyone should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D during the autumn and winter.
Vitamin D supplements can be bought from supermarkets, pharmacies and health food shops, while women and children who qualify for the Healthy Start scheme can get free supplements. Dr Powles said: "Although you don’t need to take more than 10 µg , products that provide up to 25 µg are suitable for everyone."
