In January, Sunak made reducing NHS waiting lists one of his key pledges the public should hold him accountable for 📈 But the latest NHS data reveals the number of people waiting for a non-urgent operation has inched up again to 7.3 million people
The number of people waiting for a non-urgent operation has inched up again to 7.3 million people, but there are many other figures within the monthly data dump that should ring alarm bells among ministers.
First, the Government has missed a key target of eliminating 18-month waits for planned NHS care such as knee and hip replacements. Some 10,737 people were waiting more than a year-and-a-half to start routine treatment at the end of March.
The data shows that 59 per cent of the cases are routine waits. Almost half of those waiting are believed to be concentrated in 10 NHS trusts.one of his key pledges the public should hold him accountable for, along with the promise that people would get the care they need more quickly. An election is expected next summer or autumn, meaning there is not much time to make significant, if any, inroads into the overall waiting list.
The data also confirmed that a key 62-day cancer target – returning the number of patients waiting more than 62 days to pre-pandemic levels – has also been missed.
