Saturday is Record Store Day, the biannual promotion meant to boost business at the...

She worked in retail for years until deciding she’d just as soon be her own boss. “I had enough records to open my own store, and I made it happen,” Mays says.

She likes the new location, which opened off FM 517 in August 2021, much better. Albums line the walls; bin after bin after bin of LPs of all genres, new and used, fill the floor area. Music paraphernalia is everywhere else — buttons, T-shirts, posters, even a few CDs, cassettes and 8-tracks. A listening lounge is set up near the sales counter, behind which lie the choice collectibles. It feels homey but not overcrowded, a problem Mays says she had at her last location.

With the exception of Sweet Spot Audio in Webster, which opened in 2010, Vinyl Heaven has Galveston County all to itself in terms of records. Mays says people come from all over the region: Lake Jackson, Galveston, Kemah, Clear Lake, Houston. Many come from Pasadena; more than one has told her Vinyl Heaven reminds them of Texas Tapes N’ Records.

Local DJs often come in to browse the shop’s 12-inch singles; others prefer its ample punk, new wave and metal selections. One kid of about 13 likes to come in sporting a Dio jacket. “He'll mow the lawn to get money to come in to pay for his records now, because his dad makes him work for it,” notes Mays.
