After sleeping in a horse float and training for eventing, Sandra Hore finds horse riding provides plenty of lessons about life and business.

Already a subscriber?Sandra Hore is the senior director of marketplace at Nike Pacific . She's 44 and lives in Melbourne.I was four. My older sister rode, my cousins rode. We lived on a small property and my first memory is of riding my sister’s horse. My feet didn’t reach the saddle flap.I did. I thought that I could control the horse through my imagination. If I just believed the horse could move, he would move.

Sandra Hore with one of her horses. “Horse riding is the most incredible sport to teach you about life and business: respect for others, pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.”I got my first pony on my sixth birthday. It was a real moment of surprise and delight. Mum and Dad blindfolded me and took me outside. Mum put my hand on the pony’s nose and asked me what I thought it was. I guessed a rabbit – not quite. When she took the blindfold off, I couldn’t believe it.

, beginning with formal coaching at pony club as a kid. The learning was probably most intense as a teenager, in the second phase. I really honed my skills. You’re always improving. At Nike, we say there’s no finish line. It’s that way in riding, too.My chosen sport was eventing, which is like a triathlon on horseback. Dressage, showjumping and cross-country. There is a lot of flat-work and jumping, and it demands a lot of skill from the horse and the rider. It was a full-time lifestyle.

The greatest lesson she’s learnt from horse riding? “That horses will mirror your behaviour – and that applies to business, too.”Yes, of course! But that’s the whole point of life. It’s OK to be scared and take risks. It’s important to know you have the experience and knowledge available to you to take that chance. Fail fast, but always give it a go.That horses will mirror your behaviour – and that applies to business, too. When you show up afraid or unprepared, the horse knows.
