You’ve talked about the moment that you first learned about the date 1619 — you were taking an elective class during high school, “The African American Experience.” Can you talk about what learning about that date did to your understanding of this country and its history at the time?I talk about that moment, coming across the date 1619, in a book that Mr. Dial gave me called “Before the Mayflower,” as being somewhat of a lightning bolt moment for me.
With “Before the Mayflower,” it was about 30 pages in that I realized what the title was talking about. That’s when it talks about a ship named the White Lion, that landed at Point Comfort, Virginia in 1619, and I had never heard that date before, I’d never seen that date before, and I’d never heard of the White Lion.
