Q: There are moments throughout the book – even essays that aren’t your own – that feel like they double back to your opening essay about your father and the American flag and his deep belief in displaying it publicly. Q: There are 20th century moments with close documentation that transformed from history to mythology. The Babe Ruth called shot is a minor example, but a significant one. But sometimes I think we regard history as something clear when in actuality a lot of it is similar to when poets documented it.
We never questioned those narratives that glorified whiteness and erased everybody else. Being at the center of the universe doesn’t mean you have exclusive rights on being the good guy. Many good guys were not good. They were deeply complicated. It’s hard for people who never had to think about that to think otherwise. As a Black person, I was searching for acknowledgement that we existed. That’s where the tension came from. We didn’t make sense with the way history was taught.
