A man with pneumonia was forced to wait for over nine hours in an ambulance outside the Lyell McEwin Hospital before being admitted, as the emergency department faced a surge in patient numbers exceeding its capacity. The doctors' union highlighted the severe strain on staff and resources, while the health minister noted population growth and increased flu cases as potential causes for the demand spike.
A non-verbal man with pneumonia waited for more than nine hours in an ambulance outside an Adelaide hospital on a day that the doctors' union described as a 'flashpoint' for emergency department demand.
Alison Marsh, caring for her brother Michael McLean who has a traumatic brain injury, reported that although the ambulance arrived quickly, the wait to be admitted into the hospital's emergency room was exceptionally long. The South Australian Salaried Medical Officers' Association noted that the emergency department was operating at more than double its capacity, leading to significant delays in treatment. The state government acknowledged the stress on the system, citing population growth and rising flu cases as contributing factors.
