Nothing that Nine’s managing director of publishing, Tory Maguire, offered at tense crisis meetings in Melbourne and Sydney on Thursday was enough to call off the strike. An improved pay offer was rejected. Sneesby was adamant the strike would not affect the coverage and Nine would continue to “seamlessly deliver the best coverage for our audiences”.More details emerged this week on where the cuts would fall: 10 to 15 staff on the Age and the Sydney Morning Herald would go; six to eight from the national team of federal politics, business, world and environmental journalists.
