Nine people were killed in Israeli airstrikes on a Houthi-controlled port city in Yemen following a Houthi missile attack on Tel Aviv. Israel intercepted the missile before it could hit the city. The airstrikes risk further escalating the conflict between Israel and the Iranian-backed Houthis, who have disrupted global shipping with their attacks on the Red Sea corridor. While Hamas and Hezbollah have faced intense military strikes, the Houthis have not, but Israel has warned of a 'sevenfold' retaliation for future attacks.
The strikes occurred in response to a Houthi missile fired at Tel Aviv, which Israel was able to intercept before it struck the city. The rebel group has so far managed to avoid the same level of intense military strikes that have targeted Hamas and Hezbollah, but Israel has warned the Houthi it will retaliate "sevenfold" for future attacks.
The Houthi-controlled satellite channel al-Masirah said some of the strikes targeted power stations in the capital Sana'a, as well as the Ras Isa oil terminal on the Red Sea. "I suggest the leaders of the Houthis to see, to understand and remember: Whoever raises a hand against the state of Israel, his hand will be cut off," Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said.Rebel-held Hodeida, about 145 kilometres south-west of Sana'a, has been key for food shipments into Yemen as its decade-long war has continued. There's also longstanding suspicion that weapons from Iran have been transferred through the port.
In Ramat Gan, a suburb of Tel Aviv, fragments from the missile collapsed a school there, without causing any injuries. On Monday, the US military's Central Command said that it hit "a key command-and-control facility" operated by the Houthis in Sana'a, later identified as the al-Ardi complex, which was once home to the government's Defense Ministry.
The Department of Defence has confirmed Australia provided support for US strikes on October 17 targeting Houthi facilities.
