Matilda, who was two-and-a-half years old at the time, was playing next to her parents when she started screaming. "He lifted up her feet and the skin on her feet was just melting off, like they were literally like sliding off her feet," Mrs Hawkins said.The family went to Hedland Health Campus where they were told Matilda had third-degree burns and she would need to be flown to Perth for treatment.

"If you can't put them out cold before you leave that area you need to make it very clear that there is a fire there or there was an old fire there," she said.
