The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games might seem like a long way off but for the country’s youngest athletes there is no time to lose in preparing to win gold at home.

Queensland sprinter Calab Law is only 19 years old but is already one of the fastest men in the country, after a stellar 12 months on the track at home and abroad.

Last year the proud Indigenous athlete became the youngest Australian male selected in more than a decade to compete at the World Athletics Championships, which was held in Oregon, US. His streak continued weeks later, taking a bronze at the World Athletics Under 20 Championships in Cali, Colombia, finishing in just 20.48 seconds in the 200 metres.

Law is one of a new generation of athletes and was born years after the Sydney 2000 Olympics yet can recall every second of Cathy Freeman’s famous gold-winning 400-metre run.“I’ve watched her videos, I’ve watched her Olympics 2000 race, I’ve watched her World Championships.“I want someone to look up to me like I look up to Cathy or look up to other Indigenous sprinters - that’s really what I want by the end of my career.

While he has been out because of injury for the past three months, Law is aiming to qualify for the Olympics in Paris next year, but first competing at the World Athletics Relays in the Bahamas in May 2024.“I want to be the defending Olympic champion [going into] the Brisbane Olympics,” he said.----------------------------------------Name: Claudia Bailey
