An event marking NJ Transit's 40th anniversary was protested by engineers over contract negotiations.

Members of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen protest the lack of progress on a new contract in Bay Head as an excursion train celebrating NJ Transit's 40th anniversary arrived on Saturday afternoon.A train ride of vintage railcars held Saturday to mark the 40th anniversary of NJ Transit commuter rail operations was met by about 150 protesting locomotive engineers in Bay Head who are upset about the pace of negotiations with the agency to reach a new contract.

“People need to understand in general that if there are no engineers, the trains don’t move,” said Scott Treibitz, a BLE&T spokesman. “And if the trains don’t go what happens to our economy, what happens to our supply chain? It’s a much bigger issue... this is about keeping New Jersy moving.” “NJ Transit has made a more than fair and pattern-based offer that has been accepted by 14 of the 15 rail unions,” said Jim Smith, a spokesperson, in a statement. “Unions across the entire state are settling contracts for similar economics - the BLET remains the lone holdout. Their refusal to accept $22.3 million dollars in raises for their members is inexplicable, and that’s on them.”

The $22.3 million dollars in salary increases has been budgeted by the agency for BLET members over the 4 years of the current contract. That includes retroactive pay increases that would have come to engineers since the 2019 contract.
