NJSIAA monitoring wildfires, air quality for Group championships
New Jersey has had to deal with its own wildfires like one currently, and now residents are also seeing and feeling the affects of fires from another country. With Group championships happening Wednesday for boys tennis and for other sports through the rest of the week, the NJSIAA is monitoring air quality, implying in a statement Wednesday morning that competition schedules could change, depending on the smoke.
“NJSIAA is closely monitoring air quality data across New Jersey and local/state health advisories,” NJSIAA spokesman Mike Cherenson said in the statement. “As start times for athletic events draw near, we will make decisions for each venue and sport based on currently available information. Schools should monitor official NJSIAA communications only for updates and understand that all schedules are subject to change.
Air quality took a major turn for the worse across the state on Tuesday afternoon because of wildfires in Quebec, Canada, according to the National Weather Service. There was a very noticeable smoky smell and hazy sky because of smoke plumes. People from all over called local police and fire departments, and many towns sent out alerts detailing the situation.
Where did all of this thick, heavy smoke across the Northeast come from? Raging wildfires in Quebec are generating large smoke plumes to the north and ALL of the smoke is being funneled right into the Northeast. Unfortunately, more smoke is on the way for tonight and Wednesday.

Air Quality This Week Gives U.S. a Glimpse of the World’s Air PollutionThe dangerous haze hovering over parts of the Northeast and Midwest on Wednesday morning was highly unusual for the United States. For many people around the world, it would be somewhat normal. Cities across Asia, Africa and Latin America have been so polluted for so long that air-quality readings like the ones expected across parts of New York state on Wednesday — which is expected to pose risks for people with respiratory problems — would not be seen as particular cause for alarm. “Maybe forei
