No. 1 Pearland downs Atascocita to advance to regional quarterfinal
DEER PARK — No. 1 state-ranked Pearland will live to see another day in the high school baseball playoffs — but just barely.
Gritty Atascocita gave the Oilers all they could handle for two days, but when John Moya’s two-out single to right field drove in pinch runner Franco Aguilar in the bottom of the eighth inning, Pearland could finally celebrate a 4-3 win in the finale of a best-of-three series at Jim Kethan Field.For Atascocita head coach Eric Matthews, the loss represented the end of a storied coaching career as he soon moves into an assistant athletic director role.
“We took them to the end,” Matthews said. “We had our opportunities. Pearland capitalized and hats off to them. They’re a good team. Our guys did everything we asked of them.” Moya delivered the game-winning hit after Nico Partida singled to start the Oiler half of the eighth.Moya then followed with his sharp line drive to right which prompted a bench-clearing celebration.The Texas A&M signee was summoned to be Saturday’s starting pitcher and complemented a sterling performance on the mound with a single, a double and a sacrifice fly.For most of Saturday’s game, Ferraro put the Oilers on his back.
“Right after the game I learned I was pitching today,” Ferraro said."It’s been a while since I started a game — almost two months. I just focused on throwing strikes because we had trouble doing that yesterday.”“I pitched a lot last year and stuck to what I knew,” he said.Leadoff hitter Ferraro ignited the rally by doubling off the centerfield wall, and a wild pitch moved courtesy runner Jordan Hernandez to third.
